Have cleaned with vinegar and with salt, and even dilute bleach; have dried thoroughly and allowed it to sit open for a few days. The filtered water has a mold or stale smell and slightly bitter taste. It is still filtering through at a good rate. Filter is 6 months old. I am not using the product anymore because of this.

I read that plastic has chemicals that leaks into the water and that is why it isn't safe.
